Why study theater? Is theater a truly academic course? Can a dedicated and sophisticated grasp of theater help me understand the world around me? Can anyone be a good actor? Have you ever seen good theater? Is theater dead now that movies are so popular?
Each and every day, we all negotiate an innumerable number of dramatic experiences. Drama is the interaction of human intentions. As we each possess differing desires and hopes conflict arises when these desires meet obstacles. It is when those obstacles lie in other people that true dramatic conflict is born. While this knowledge of theater can help anyone better understand a dramatic text or performance, it can also help us better navigate our everyday lives.
In this course, we will be studying four cross-sections of theater.
Basic Theater History
Basic Theater Terminology and Conventions
Critical Dramatic Thematic Analysis
Foundational Acting Skills.
